Cosimo Matassa

April 13, 1926 – September 11, 2014 Β· New Orleans, LA

Cosimo Vincent Matassa was a legendary American recording engineer and studio owner who fundamentally shaped the New Orleans sound and the trajectory of R&B and early rock and roll. At just 18 years old in 1945, he opened J&M Recording Studio in the back of his family's shop on Rampart Street in the French Quarter, creating one of the most historically significant recording spaces in American music history.

Working with icons like Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, and countless legends, Matassa's technical innovation and ear for the New Orleans musical tradition helped define an entire era of popular music. His studio became a gateway for discovering and recording the raw, authentic sound that would influence generations of musicians worldwide. In 2012, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2021, he was awarded the Grammy Trustees Award for his immeasurable contributions to recording arts.
